Raised alert level due to the earthquakes on the Reykjanes Peninsula

Increased seismic activity in the Reykjanes peninsula. Stay away from mountains and slopes in the area due to danger of rockfall and landslides.

The Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management, in consultation with the Reykjanes peninsula chief of police, has declared a level of uncertainty due to the earthquakes on the Reykjanes Peninsula. A series of earthquakes began on the evening of July 4 and is still ongoing.

The eruption site at Mt. Fagradalsfjall is a popular destination and therefore a lot of visitors to the area. Visitors and Tourism companies that offer tours to the area are encouraged to follow developments particularly closely.

Tourism operators, accommodation providers and others who interact with travellers are generally asked to keep their customers informed. People are also encouraged to stay away from mountains and slopes in the area due to the danger of rockfalls and landslides.
